BHP : It started with a radio interview

Three years ago Graham Creagh from BHP Mitsubishi Alliance's (BMA) Hay Point Coal Terminal listened to a radio interview about the impact of domestic violence on families and he wanted to do something to help.

Teaming up with Coal Port Pharmacy and Mackay Women's Centre based in Mackay, Queensland, BMA's Hay Point Coal Terminal team has donated over $6,500 in Local Buying Program vouchers this year to go towards supplies for women and children in need at the Centre.

Coal Port Pharmacy owner, Lisa Hodder, said BMA employees make up the majority of her customers and are essential for keeping her business sustainable and relevant.

"The selfless acts of Graham and the Hay Point team supports our business as well as supports a really noble cause for women - we're really pleased to be involved," Lisa said.

With the Local Buying vouchers donated by employees, Lisa packages up toiletries requested by the Mackay Women's Centre for Graham to deliver each month.

"The Local Buy vouchers brings more customers to our small group of shops here at Hay Point and we also get return business."

"While we understand investment areas may need to be reviewed due to the increased royalties from the Queensland government, it would be sad to see initiatives like the Local Buying program impacted. These initiatives are making a real difference in our communities."

Graham Creagh said thanks to the generosity of the Hay Point team we are supporting a local business and an important service for women here in Mackay.

"In total, Hay Point has donated over $25,000 to the Mackay Women's Centre since 2019 through one-off donations or other site initiatives," Graham said.

"And in the context of the disappointing royalty decision this is proof of BMA contributing to the social welfare and betterment of the community - we don't just contribute taxes and royalties. The commitment of BMA to support both small local businesses and our communities are the stories that deserve telling."
