Meet Zane: A keen fisherman sharing his catch with the team

One of the benefits of living in Port Hedland is the close proximity to the ocean and the abundance of fresh seafood.

Keen fisherman Zane, Project Officer at our port operations, spends most weekends out on his boat with friends and family catching fresh fish, which he generously shares with his work colleagues - by bringing in fresh fish burgers.

Zane said the tradition started two years ago and has continued each week since.

"A few of us would bring in some of our excess fish fillets and the Port Production and Maintenance teams would supply the other bits bread, sauces, salads. The fish burgers were always a big hit with the teams, and I guess it grew from there," he said.

"Seeing people being able to come together and enjoy a meal with the rest of their work mates, chatting and having a laugh is a great culture booster."

The team also use the tradition to raise money for charities collecting over $1,200 towards Movember and the BHP Push-Up Challenge.

"One of our teammates had a severely sick family member and was suddenly having to travel for medical treatment. We decided to show our support and raised some funds to help ease the financial burden. We did a bit of a collection, and everyone was so supportive."

"Someone then suggested we should keep using the day to assist with some other good cause, and we have followed on from there."

Zane moved to Port Hedland nine years ago after his wife, who has worked at BHP for 19 years, accepted a new role.

He said his love of the water and fishing made Port Hedland a great place to live.

"I've grown up around boats, as far back as I remember I've had a line in the water. It's just my happy place where all my concerns seem to melt away."
