U.K. antitrust officials said they were opening a formal investigation into BlackRock's acquisition of U.K. data provider Preqin over concerns the $3.22 billion deal could stifle competition in the country.

The Competition and Markets Authority launched an initial review of the deal earlier this month. Officials have now opted to open a formal probe, with a decision due by Feb. 12 on whether a more in-depth investigation is warranted.

BlackRock and Preqin didn't immediately respond to requests for comment.
