SAN LUIS POTOSÍ (dpa-AFX) - BMW also plans to build fully electric cars in Mexico from 2027. The company announced Friday an investment of 800 million euros for the integration of the "New Class" models and for a new assembly center for high-voltage batteries at its plant in the central Mexican state of San Potosí.

"We are consistently aligning our production network with electric mobility," said BMW Board Member for Production Milan Nedeljkovicl, who is currently in San Luis Potosí. In this way, the automaker intends to accelerate production of the new electric car series, which is scheduled to roll off the production line at the Debrecen plant in Hungary from 2025.

Mexico is an important automotive location primarily because of its proximity to the important U.S. market and relatively low labor costs. The production facility in San Luis Potosí was opened in 2019. BMW already produces the 3 Series Sedan, 2 Series Coupe and M2 there. The new investments are expected to create around 1,000 additional jobs at the Mexican plant./aso/DP/zb
