STORY: Air India is reportedly in talks with U.S. planemaker Boeing to acquire around 10 737 MAX jets that were sent back by Chinese airlines.

That's according to two people familiar with the discussions.

It comes after Chinese customers started rejecting Boeing planes amid a trade war with the US.

Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg said Wednesday (April 24) that, due to the tariffs, many airlines in China had indicated that they would not take delivery,

and that the company could redirect jets to other customers.

The U.S. and China, the world's two largest economies, have imposed duties exceeding 100% on each other.

The two sources, who declined to be named as the discussions are private, said Air India was seeking around 10 narrowbody planes from Boeing.

And they would be used by its budget carrier, Air India Express, which has a fleet of more than 100 aircraft.

None of the companies involved immediately responded to a request for comment.

But the move could be a boost to Air India's expansion plans as the group's growth has been constrained by a lack of new aircraft.

Last month, CEO Campbell Wilson said the airline was a "victim of circumstance," referring to delivery delays plaguing Boeing and Airbus.
