When Rob, an avid cyclist, learned he had inherited a rare genetic heart condition that increased his risk of sudden cardiac arrest, he feared that his days of thrilling trail rides had come to an end.

"I am a very active person, and exercise is very important to me," says Rob. "Staying active makes me feel happy and alive."

Sudden cardiac arrest occurs when the heart's electrical system malfunctions, causing the heart to suddenly stop beating. With Rob's condition, his heartbeat would become dangerously fast, making high-intensity workouts extremely dangerous and putting him at risk of a sudden cardiac arrest.

Rob's doctor suggested he receive the EMBLEMTM MRI Subcutaneous Implantable Defibrillator (S-ICD) System immediately. The EMBLEM MRI S-ICD System continuously monitors the heart and sends an electrical shock when it detects an abnormally fast heart rate in order to normalize the heart rhythm. Compared to a traditional ICD, the EMBLEM MRI S-ICD System is a less invasive implantable device and the newest type of ICD, positioned just under the skin with no wires touching the heart.

Shortly after Rob received his EMBLEM MRI S-ICD System, the lifesaving technology was put to the test. While spending a weekend with friends, Rob experienced a series of sudden cardiac arrests, and each time the device saved his life by delivering an electrical shock.

"Without this technology, I wouldn't be here today," says Rob.
