SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) _ Broadcom Inc. (AVGO) on Thursday reported fiscal second-quarter profit of $2.59 billion.

On a per-share basis, the San Jose, California-based company said it had net income of $5.93. Earnings, adjusted for one-time gains and costs, came to $9.07 per share.

The results topped Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of 10 analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of $8.72 per share.

The chipmaker posted revenue of $8.1 billion in the period, which also beat Street forecasts. Nine analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $7.91 billion.

For the current quarter ending in August, Broadcom Inc. said it expects revenue in the range of $8.4 billion. Analysts surveyed by Zacks had expected revenue of $7.36 billion.

Broadcom Inc. shares have decreased 20% since the beginning of the year, while the S&P's 500 index has dropped 17%. The stock has increased 16% in the last 12 months.
