BRENTWOOD, Tenn. (AP) _ Brookdale Senior Living Inc. (BKD) on Thursday reported third-quarter net income of $174.3 million, after reporting a loss in the same period a year earlier.

On a per-share basis, the Brentwood, Tennessee-based company said it had net income of 89 cents. Losses, adjusted for non-recurring gains, came to 27 cents per share.

The results topped Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of three analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for a loss of 44 cents per share.

The senior housing company posted revenue of $641.7 million in the period.

Brookdale shares have climbed 49% since the beginning of the year. In the final minutes of trading on Thursday, shares hit $6.62, more than doubling in the last 12 months.
