News date: December 30, 2020

On 29 and 30 December 2020, as part of constructing the Tuszyn-Piotrków A1 motorway, Budimex opened two key road junctions: Piotrków Zachód (linking the A1 to the S8 expressway) and Piotrków Południe (the 'largest European roundabout'). The commissioning of the two new junctions, complete with a new, temporary 2+2 traffic system (two lanes towards Katowice and two lanes towards Łódź) will considerably reduce the travel time between the junctions, reducing it from 40 minutes to 10 minutes in rush hours. Both junctions form a key section of 'Poland's backbone of roads', where the S8 expressway intersects the A1 section under construction and the DK74 national road between Piotrków Trybunalski and Łódź.

The temporary two-lane traffic for both directions is carried by the new roadway of the motorway under construction, along the full 15 km of the contract being delivered by Budimex. The opening ceremony of the key motorway section was attended by Andrzej Adamczyk, Minister of Infrastructure, Tomasz Żuchowski, Director of GDDKiA, Dariusz Blocher, President of Budimex SA, and Artur Popko, Vice-President of Budimex SA.

'Our objective is to hand over the whole project before the contractual deadline scheduled for the end of 2021, not unlike what we attempt to achieve under many contracts. Our special acknowledgements go to the Budimex team for their efforts in the completion of this work package ahead of schedule,' said Dariusz Blocher, President of Budimex SA, during the opening ceremony.

'From the middle of January 2021 a section speed limit will be in effect on this section of the A1. All motorists travelling the new section of the A1 are asked to drive carefully and respect the 70 kmh speed limit. Note that construction work continues on the adjacent road and the safety of construction workers largely depends on the responsibility of motorists', Dariusz Blocher added.

'The biggest bottleneck on the A1 is now behind us. What you have done today, gentlemen, and I am addressing the GDDKiA Contractors, is no small feat,' Minister Andrzej Adamczyk said during the opening ceremony of Piotrków Południe Junction.

Construction progress has reached 65% on the A1 Tuszyn to Piotrków section. The construction work have already begun on the other roadway, the former DK1. The scheduled deadline for construction work completion and opening to the target traffic is December 2021.
