Each year since 2017, to celebrate Earth Day, Jacob Wielgot, Terminal Manager at the Chicago Grain transload facility (CN CargoFlo ─ International Bulk Services), and Bob Tsihlopoulos, Terminal Manager, CN Intermodal, have organized a cleanup of the external facilities at the Intermodal Terminal in Harvey, IL, just south of Chicago. 'Our goal is to keep the yard free of debris,' says Bob, 'because it runs more efficiently and is safer that way.'
During last year's event, employees from CN Intermodal and CN CargoFlo, along with personnel from ITS and Bulk Equipment, participated in the cleanup effort. 'We like to involve the contractors who work here as they all have a stake in this yard,' explains Jacob.
The commitment of Harvey Intermodal Terminal employees to safety and the environment goes beyond keeping the yard neat. For example, over the past couple of years, Jacob has upgraded all facility lighting to LEDs, which has led to improved lighting quality, reduced energy usage and lower maintenance costs. 'The installation of LEDs at the facility has improved the lighting drastically,' says Jacob, 'and created a safer environment for my employees to work in, which is priceless!'
The Chicago Grain facility also has recycling and composting programs through its contractor, Waste Management. They recycle bulk cardboard from their grain stuffing operation and compost the dust, chaff and other grain residue to avoid sending it to landfill. Farmers use the composted grain in their fields to enrich the soil. 'Since the start of the compost program in January 2016,' explains Jacob, 'we have diverted over 1,500 tons of grain from landfill.'
CN's EcoConnexions Employee Engagement program - a partnership with Earth Rangers - drives sustainability across CN's network by empowering employees and their families to conserve energy, reduce waste, and improve housekeeping.
