Canadian National Railway Co. on Thursday said it moved a record amount of western Canadian grain for the 14th straight month in April.

The Montreal railroad said it moved 2.9 million metric tons of western Canadian grain in April, exceeding the previous April record of 2.82 million MT set in 2020 and more than 5% ahead of the three-year average of 2.75 million MT.

So far, during the 2020-2021 crop year, Canadian National has moved more than 25.6 million MT of Canadian grain via carload, up 17% from the previous year-to-date record of 21.9 million MT set in the 2018-19 crop year.

Containerized grain shipments direct from western Canada also are on record pace at more than 860,000 metric tonnes shipped in the crop year to date, in addition to the tonnage shipped from eastern Canada, the railroad said.
