09 March 2020 George Eustice MP visits Wave Hub battery storage scheme

'Ultimately the Cornwall Local Energy Market project is about developing the integrated technology solutions needed for a fully decarbonised electricity system. We are working with businesses across the county to deliver solutions which help them to both decarbonise and benefit from the opportunities of a changing energy market.'

Charles Cameron, Group Technology & Engineering Director, Centrica

  • Centrica Business Solutions has begun work on a new battery storage unit that will form the latest element of its pioneering Cornwall Local Energy Market
  • The 1MW battery will be one of Cornwall's largest batteries once complete
  • Battery to be connected to Local Energy Market to provide energy resilience to Cornwall Council owned Wave Hub site and the local grid.

George Eustice, Member of Parliament for Camborne, Redruth and Hayle, visited the Wave Hub site in Hayle, Cornwall, where Centrica has begun work on a new battery storage unit that will form the latest element of its pioneering Cornwall Local Energy Market.

Centrica Business Solutions has designed the 1MW battery to provide energy resilience to the Cornwall Council owned Wave Hub site and the local grid. It will be one of Cornwall's largest batteries once complete.

The multi-award-winning Cornwall Local Energy Market offers a glimpse into the future of a truly decentralised energy landscape with thousands, if not millions, of homes and businesses playing their part in regional energy markets.

It goes further than any previous project in exploring how decentralised flexible assets can work together in an efficient local energy system that meets the needs of generators, customers and networks alike - reducing strain on the grid at peak times and maximising the productivity of Cornwall's famous renewable energy generation.

Wave Hub sits within Mr Eustice's Camborne and Redruth constituency.

'This Conservative Government has committed to reducing carbon emissions to net zero by 2050, and it will need innovation, collaboration, and action to get there. This partnership between Centrica and Cornwall Council at Wave Hub is a great example of how the private and public sectors can work together to help tackle climate change. Flexibility markets like the Cornwall LEM, can empower domestic consumers to take control of their energy costs in a simple and effective way. I've also heard today about how other industries are unlocking new revenue streams by trading energy generated on their sites with other businesses across the local energy market. This is a great example of technology enabling change.'

George Eustice, MP for Camborne, Redruth and Hayle

'We're delighted with this project, not only because of the use for Wave Hub's grid connection, but also because of the opportunity to begin exploring how flexibility markets, such as the Cornwall LEM, might integrate with the first, floating offshore wind turbines at the Wave Hub site and, in the longer term, large floating offshore wind projects that we are seeking to develop in the Celtic Sea.'

Steve Jermy, Executive Chair, Wave Hub Ltd

Wave Hub Limited exists to help floating offshore wind and wave energy technologies and developers from around the world test their technologies in open sea conditions and provides some of the best wind and wave conditions in Europe.

Wave Hub Limited, which is solely owned by Cornwall Council, will own the battery storage system once in place, with Centrica responsible for the funding, construction and operation.
