Safety of Dams Policy PC.CESP.ECB.01 - Executive Summary

1. POLICY'S OBJECTIVE AND SCOPE

To establish corporate guidelines and commitments regarding the Safety of Dams used for hydropower generation in all projects under the responsibility of the Company to ensure the observance of safety standards, compliance with all laws and regulations, monitoring and accompaniment of safety actions implemented, compilation and contribution of information that fosters a culture of Dam Safety and Risk management inherent to the structures composing the dam (dam and auxiliary structures).

This Policy is applicable to all employees of the Company, especially those professionals involved in Civil Engineering and Dam Safety who are responsible for coordinating and performing all activities related to Dam Safety.

  1. BASIC PRINCIPLES
  • Continuous and constant process of assessing and improving dam safety processes and practices, supported by regular assessments;
  • Ethical, reputable and transparent conduct with regard to all stakeholders;
  • Guarantee that dam safety is considered always in all relevant decisions;
  • Guarantee compliance of all legal and regulatory frameworks and provisions;
  • Protect the life and physical integrity of all people, the environment, socio-economic activities and the property of the Company;
  • Support continuous scientific and technological development;
  • Foster a culture of dam safety and maintenance to support the development, maintenance and incorporation of the internal processes of the Company with a focus on prevention;
  • Adopt best engineering practices on a coordinated and integrated basis.
  1. MAIN GUIDELINES
  • Operate on an integrated basis in the various areas of the Company with regard to drafting documents, developing actions and other activities related to dam safety, while guaranteeing intercommunication between the parties;
  • Guarantee the implementation and revision of Dam Safety Plans (DSPs) that include Emergency Action Plans (EAPs) and the conduction of Regular Dam Safety Reviews (RDSRs) by a competent authority/institution;
  • Guarantee that all communication with the Oversight Entity, regulatory agencies and civil defense organizations with regard to dam safety is made accurately and in a timely manner;
  • Guarantee the realization of monitoring, inspection and corrective/predictive maintenance by allocating the budgeted resources and infrastructure to keep all facilities safe and operational over their entire lifecycle and ensure the implementation of continuous improvement processes;
  • Guarantee that the operation of all projects are environmentally sustainable and socially responsible and are conducted in compliance with all legislation and permitting processes;
  • Support the training programs and simulations provided for in the Civil Defense and Protection Contingency Plan (PLANCON) regarding dams, working jointly with local communities.
