DEERFIELD, Ill. (AP) _ CF Industries Holdings Inc. (CF) on Wednesday reported fourth-quarter net income of $87 million.

The Deerfield, Illinois-based company said it had profit of 40 cents per share.

The results beat Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of five analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of 8 cents per share.

The fertilizer maker posted revenue of $1.1 billion in the period, also topping Street forecasts. Three analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $984.2 million.

For the year, the company reported profit of $317 million, or $1.47 per share. Revenue was reported as $4.12 billion.

CF shares have risen 16% since the beginning of the year, while the Standard & Poor's 500 index has increased nearly 5%. In the final minutes of trading on Wednesday, shares hit $45.06, an increase of 18% in the last 12 months.
