Chevron Corp. on Thursday said it will work with a unit of Japanese industrial gases company Iwatani Corp. to co-develop and construct 30 hydrogen fueling sites in California by 2026 in an effort to help reduce carbon emissions in the transportation sector.

Chevron, based in San Ramon, Calif., said it plans to fund construction of the sites at Chevron-branded retail locations across the state, adding that the stations will initially fuel light-duty vehicles but will retain the flexibility to service heavy-duty vehicles over the long term.

Chevron said Iwatani will operate and maintain the hydrogen fueling sites and provide hydrogen supply and transportation logistics services.

The energy giant said it plans to supply a portion of the fueling sites with excess hydrogen production capacity at its Richmond refinery and future hydrogen production from pilot projects in Northern California.
