FT MYERS, Fla. (AP) _ Chico's FAS Inc. (CHS) on Tuesday reported a loss of $55.9 million in its fiscal third quarter.

The Ft Myers, Florida-based company said it had a loss of 48 cents per share. Losses, adjusted for asset impairment costs, were 42 cents per share.

The results fell short of Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of three analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for a loss of 19 cents per share.

The clothing chain posted revenue of $351.4 million in the period, which also did not meet Street forecasts. Three analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $381.7 million.

The company's shares closed at $1.77. A year ago, they were trading at $3.65.
