On the first day of the Chinese New Year on February 12, the Chinese Ambassador to Papua New Guinea (hereinafter referred to as PNG) Xue Bing and his delegation visited the PMC Project Department of EDEVU hydropower project undertaken by CGGC, to bring holiday greetings to the staff of CGGC, who were still working in the frontline overseas amid the epidemic. Guo Chao, General Commander of the Project of EDEVU hydropower project, and the Head of CGGC PNG Branch accompanied the delegation.

Scene of the greeting

Ambassador Xue Bing and his delegation first inspected the main body of the dam, the spillway, the power plant and other construction parts as well as the office and living camp of the Chinese staff. On behalf of the Party Committee of the Chinese Embassy in PNG, he expressed his greetings to the Chinese employees working in the production front line and gave his admiration for the staff of the Project Department for their perseverance and hard work during the Spring Festival. He highly praised the good achievements made by the Project Department in actively promoting the resumption of work and production, and fully affirmed the measures taken by the Project Department to create a happy and auspicious festive atmosphere.

Ambassador Xue Bing said that it had been a full year since the inspection of the Project site made during the Spring Festival in 2020, and this time it was obvious that the construction site had taken on a completely new look. This fully proved that the staff of the Project Department had actively and diligently completed a lot of work over the past year. Knowing that some Chinese employees were unable to return home on time due to the COVID-19 epidemic, he encouraged all employees to strengthen their confidence, stick to their posts, actively overcome temporary difficulties, and 'celebrate the Spring Festival in the local area'. Ambassador Xue Bing said that the Project was undertaken by a Chinese enterprise, which would bring benefits to the people of PNG, including improving their livelihood and promoting employment. This had laid a solid foundation for deepening the economic and trade relations and enhancing the long-term friendship between China and PNG. On behalf of the Chinese Embassy in PNG, he thanked every Chinese employee present for their hard work and hoped that all the staff would continue to make greater contributions to the economic and trade cooperation between the two countries. At the same time, he urged the Project Department to implement various epidemic prevention measures, carry out work on the premise of ensuring the health and safety of all employees, and required all employees to always maintain the awareness of safe production and strengthen self-protection. Finally, Ambassador Xue Bing gave his best wishes to the PMC Project Department of EDEVU hydropower project in the coming year, wishing all the Chinese employees good health and all the best.

The EDEVU hydropower project Project is located in the middle reaches of the Brown River in the northern central province of Port Moresby, the capital of PNG, and is the second-stage hydropower station on the cascade hydropower stations in the basin. The type of dam is steel film face rockfill dam, and the ground workshop is set behind the dam. With an installed capacity of 54MW, it is currently the largest hydropower project in Papua New Guinea and is expected to be completed in June 2022. After completion, the Project will generate 250 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually and provide stable power supply for the capital of Port Moresby.
