China Southern Airlines Co. is planning a cash injection after posting a quarterly loss due to the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on summer travel.

The Guangzhou-based carrier said late Friday that it posted a net loss of 1.43 billion yuan (US$223.2 million) for the quarter, or a loss of CNY1.65 billion after deducting non-recurring gains and losses.

Revenue rose 2.0% from a year earlier to CNY26.92 billion, it said.

For the first nine months of the year, the carrier's net loss narrowed to CNY6.12 billion from a loss of CNY7.46 billion a year ago, while revenue climbed 20% to CNY78.495 billion.

Separately, the company said it will seek to raise up to CNY4.50 billion via the issuance of new A-shares and up to 1.8 billion Hong Kong dollars (US$231.4 million) via an issuance of new H-shares, both to its controlling shareholder. Proceeds will go toward the company's general working capital, it said.
