Recently, the east and west bridges of the EL-Ferdan double-wing swing railway bridge crossing the Suez Canal in Egypt have been successfully docked on a simultaneous trial run. It will be connected with the EL-Ferdan Railway Bridge upon completion, thus becoming the largest swing railway bridge in the world. CSCEC participated in constructing the project.

It is a key national project in Egypt and an important infrastructure of the Belt and Road Initiative. Once completed, the bridge can be rotated and connected within 18 minutes, reducing the single passage time of railway transportation to 3 minutes. Compared with car ferry, whose round trip lasts for a minimum of 30 minutes, the bridge will increase transportation capacity and traffic efficiency by several times, therefore greatly promoting the economic development of both sides of the strait.

The 14,000-ton main steel structure used in the swing bridge is all made by CSCEC. The component plate can be as thick as 150 mm. And a single component plate has a maximum weight of 152 tons and a maximum length of 40 meters, which requires high processing standards of the factory. CSCEC carried out the flow operation of the workshop, and made the innovation of modular unit manufacturing, thus increasing the efficiency by about two times. At the same time, the welding process test of ultra-thick plate was carried out to ensure that the welding qualified rate is 100%.

The successful closure of the bridge marks the beginning of a steel link between Asia and Africa across the Suez Canal, one of the world's golden waterways.
