Over ten billion in a hundred days! Baihetan Hydropower Station has achieved a "good start" in the first quarter

2023-04-19

Recently, the Jinsha River Baihetan Hydropower Station with the world's second largest installed capacity has been into operation for 100 days. In the past 100 days, CYPC Baihetan Hydropower Plant under China Three Gorges Corporation has made every effort to ensure operation safety and energy supply. With the accumulative power generation of over 15 billion KWH, Baihetan Hydropower Station has successfully achieved a "good start" in the first quarter after full operation.

Located on the lower reaches of the Jinsha River at the junction of Ningnan County in Sichuan Province and Qiaojia County in Yunnan Province, the Baihetan Hydropower Station is the second cascade power station of four cascade power stations invested and constructed by China Three Gorges Corporation in the lower reaches of the Jinsha River. It is a major project in China to implement the "West-to-East Power Transmission Project", and is the largest and most technically challenging hydropower project under construction in the world today.

The Baihetan Hydropower Station is equipped with 16 hydropower units with one million KW installed capacity each, which are the world's largest and developed independently by China, with a total installed capacity of 16 million KW. On December 20, 2022, all units of Baihetan Hydropower Station were put into operation for power generation. On February 27, 2023, all units of Baihetan Hydropower Station passed the start-up acceptance with high standard.

To earnestly carry out the handover of construction and management and ensure energy supply, the CYPC Baihetan Power Plant China Three Gorges Corporation has made systematic plans for management, operation, and maintenance of the units with the principle of "the opening is a decisive battle, the start is a sprint", continuously strengthened the monitoring, analysis, and evaluation of the units, studied the characteristics and laws of operation and management of million KW units, and carefully cultivated the core capabilities of operation and management of million KW units, to ensure the healthy, efficient, and stable operation of all units.

"The 16 million KW units of Baihetan Hydropower Station have all successfully achieved one-time startup, one-time trial operation, and safe and stable operation upon takeover, setting multiple new records in the world hydropower industry. Next, we will continue to ensure the healthy and stable operation of the units and make every effort to ensure energy supply." Zhang Ge, Director of Baihetan Power Plant, said.

As the world's second largest hydropower station ranking only second to the Three Gorges Power Station, the designed annual average power generation of Baihetan Hydropower Station can reach 62.443 billion KWH, which can meet the daily power demand of over 65 million people per year, and is equivalent to saving about 18.83 million tons of standard coal and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by about 51.7 million tons.

With all units of the Baihetan Hydropower Station having been put into operation for power generation, the six giant cascade hydropower stations constructed and operated by China Three Gorges Corporation in the stem stream of Yangtze River have installed a total of 110 hydropower units, with a total installed capacity of 71.695 million KW, forming the world's largest clean energy corridor. The combined dispatching and coordinated operation of six giant power stations, with an annual average power generation of 300 billion KWH, can effectively alleviate the power shortage in central and eastern China, as well as provinces such as Sichuan, Yunnan, and Guangdong, and play an important role in supporting the "West-to-East Power Transmission Project" and the safe and stable operation of the power grid. What's more, the six giant power stations can save about 90.45 million tons of standard coal every year and reduce about 248 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions, which will play a positive role in improving China's energy structure and achieving the goal of peak carbon dioxide emissions and carbon neutrality.

China Three Gorges Corporation gives full play to its leading role, strengthens the stabilization of major hydropower, takes the initiative to shoulder the major political responsibilities for ensuring power supply, water supply, and people's livelihood, and helps ensure China's energy security, to give full play to the comprehensive benefits of the Pillars of a Great Power through lean management of the world's largest clean energy corridor. On April 9, CYPC announced that in the first quarter of this year, the world's largest clean energy corridor's six power stations had generated a total of approximately 55.598 billion KWH of power. The Baihetan, Xiluodu, and Xiangjiaba hydropower stations had set a new record of generating capacity in the same period in the first quarter and achieved a "good start" of power generation in 2023.
