Employees at the Chipotle Mexican Grill store in Augusta, Maine are taking the first step toward unionizing in petitioning a federal labor board to hold a union election.

It is the first brand store to take such action, according to a Reuters report.

The news comes as employees at other top brand chains, including Starbucks, aim to unionize in a quest for more pay, benefits and workplace environments.

The union action follows a walkout at the store over claims of unsafe conditions, low staff and lack of training and support.

The petition was filed last Wednesday and the employees have formed a union called Chipotle United.

Chipotle had not yet commented on the union action, according to Reuters.
