Hirosaki University (President: Shinsaku Fukuda; Location: Hirosaki, Aomori Prefecture; "Hirosaki University") and Chubu Electric Power Co., Inc. (President: Kingo Hayashi; Headquarters: Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture; "Chubu Electric Power") established a joint research course "Lithium Resource Recycling Engineering Course" ("the Course") at Hirosaki University Graduate School of Science and Technology and the satellite site within Chubu Electric Power's Technology Development Division on April 1 to establish lithium recovery technology.

Toyota Motor Corporation ("Toyota Motor") will also participate in the joint research in this course.

Demand for lithium, which is mainly used in storage batteries, has increased significantly in recent years due to the shift to electric vehicles to achieve a decarbonized society, and is expected to grow further in the future.

On the other hand, concerns about future environmental problems caused by discarded lithium-ion batteries, etc., have led to calls for the establishment of technologies to efficiently recover and recycle lithium from used products.

The joint research will conduct basic research to establish an efficient lithium recovery technology that significantly improves recovery speed and energy efficiency over conventional methods. It combines the lithium concentration and recovery technology using electrolyte membrane electrodialysis method, developed by Hirosaki University in 2020, with Chubu Electric Power's expertise in optimizing electrical control and energy efficiency, as well as Toyota Motor's expertise in lithium-ion battery development.

Through their joint research in this course, both parties will contribute to the sustainable development of a society and the realization of a decarbonized society by promoting the reuse of limited resources.
