Chunghwa Telecom (2412) today (12) officially announced that its Thai branch company office signed a memorandum of cooperation (MOU) with" Provincial Electricity Authority of Thailand (PEA)", the largest state-owned electricity enterprise in Thailand to start a series of strategic cooperation in Smart City and Smart Energy related subjects. In recent years, Chunghwa Telecom has continued to expand into overseas markets with the goal of "stepping outside of Taiwan to the world" by actively deploying and extending its footprints in the global market, in partnership with local enterprises to provide integrated information and communication services for multinational enterprises.

To support the growth of the digital economy and strengthen the momentum of national economic development, the Thai government selected Smart Cities program as one of its focuses. Currently the government has launched several preferential investment plans to actively develop Smart Cities. The Thai government set a goal to develop 100 smart cities within 20 years. To achieve this, the government has launched two significant national policies: "Smart Thailand 2020" and "Thailand 4.0," demonstrating its commitment to modernization. In the foreseeable future, major cities such as Bangkok, Pattaya, and Chiang Mai will gradually transform into smart cities, and technologies like 5G and AIoT will become important indicators for measuring progress in smart city construction. Based on these emerging trends, Chunghwa Telecom will leverage its success in assisting Taiwan's county and city governments to build smart cities, and share its expertise and provide support to various units in Thailand to help achieve their goal of developing 100 smart cities.

Provincial Electricity Authority of Thailand (PEA) is the largest electricity company in Thailand, with a market share of over 68%. Since 2018, PEA has taken the lead in seizing business opportunities in smart energy, renewable energy and charging systems. PEA provides crucial infrastructure for the Thai government's digital transformation strategy. PEA recognizes the excellent software and hardware strengths of Chunghwa Telecom and has a high level of interest and confidence in Chunghwa telecom's smart city solutions. The two companies have been in communication since the end of 2022, and after several discussions, they decided to further build up partnership. On May 12, 2023, the two companies jointly announced their plan of cooperation.

Following the signing of the MOU, the two parties will use PEA Bangkok Park as a demonstration site for Chunghwa Telecom's smart city solutions. The preliminary plan is to simultaneously build smart city solutions such as CHTCityOS, Smart Poles, and Smart meters in the park to showcase CHT's smart solutions. Additionally, PEA also selected other cities with development potential to implement CHT's smart transportation solutions to resolve local security concerns. Furthermore, CHT's Smart Energy solutions, already proven successful in Taiwan, will be introduced to the Thai market to further advance the vision of a "Smart Thailand.
