Chunghwa Telecom today announced that it has been awarded Top 5% S&P Global ESG Score in the Sustainability Yearbook 2023. The Sustainability Yearbook 2023 is based on the 2022 Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA) that evaluated over 7,800 companies. The Yearbook highlights the best-performing companies among industry peers, in terms of financially material environmental, social, and governance (ESG) metrics. Chunghwa Telecom was included in the Sustainability Yearbook and honored with the Silver Class award for the Telecommunications group.

Chunghwa Telecom, with its outstanding achievements in governance, environment and society, has become the best telecommunications service provider in Taiwan. In terms of environment, Chunghwa Telecom is the first telecom operator in the world to pass "the conformity check for the TCFD Recommendations on climate-related financial disclosure" with the highest rating of "Level 5: Excellence grade". Chunghwa Telecom is also the first telecom company in Taiwan to complete 100% carbon inventory and verification. Chunghwa Telecom was the first among its peers to implement an internal carbon fee mechanism; it also expanded its use of energy-saving equipment and built its own solar photovoltaics, striving to achieve RE100 by 2040 and net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

In terms of society, under the continuous impact of COVID-19, Chunghwa Telecom has devoted more resources to promote digital empowerment and bridge the digital divide in rural areas. Through its high-quality and high-speed network services, Chunghwa Telecom has dedicated itself to set up broadband networks in remote and isolated areas to help children continuously obtain educational resources. Chunghwa Telecom has also made strides for emergency medical care services through 5G private networks, which help to facilitate care for residents in rural areas; furthermore, Chunghwa Telecom has assisted small and medium-sized enterprises to mitigate the economic impact of the epidemic by applying digital technology. Chunghwa Telecom fully carried out its corporate mission of becoming a "pioneer of smart living" and "enabler of the digital economy", and works to truly achieve the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

In terms of corporate governance, Chunghwa Telecom actively improves its employee benefits and builds a friendly workplace. In 2021, it has pioneered a childcare welfare measure that is unique in Taiwan, allowing colleagues with children under 3 years old to reduce their workday by 1 hour per day. In 2022, workplace education and health centers were set up in the 6 main municipalities, so that employees can balance work and family without worries. This policy obviously exceeds the requirements of the government, not only setting a precedent for its peers, but also playing a leading role in Taiwan.

Chunghwa Telecom also took the lead among telecom operators as early as 2018 to introduce the "Supplier Sustainability Grading" system and formulate auditing standards that meet ESG criteria in the telecommunications industry. In 2022, 35 key suppliers of Chunghwa Telecom have been called on to sign the "Response to Chunghwa Telecom's Net Zero Emission Commitment" to witness and support Chunghwa Telecom's supply chain net zero initiative. The suppliers have also set their own carbon reduction goals and practices, doing their best to fulfill Chunghwa Telecom's supply chain partner responsibility, and are working together with Chunghwa Telecom to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.
