Cleanaway welcomes appointment of TOMRA Cleanaway as Network Operator for Recycle Rewards

Today it was announced by the Tasmanian Government that TOMRA Cleanaway has been appointed the Network Operator for 'Recycle Rewards', Tasmania's Container Refund Scheme (CRS).

Tasmanians can now cash in on eligible drink cans and bottles. Recycle Rewards is anticipated to commence mid-next year with a network of convenient refund points across the State.

TOMRA Cleanaway is a 50/50 joint venture between Cleanaway and TOMRA that brings together Cleanaway's logistics and processing capability and TOMRA's reverse vending machine technology to deliver a comprehensive CRS network. Cleanaway has extensive experience in various container deposit schemes across the country, with the TOMRA Cleanaway joint venture reappointed as the sole Network Operator for the highly successful NSW scheme in 2022 and one of the three Network Operators appointed in Victoria late last year.

As the Network Operator TOMRA Cleanaway will be responsible for the Tasmanian CRS network of return points, including Reverse Vending Machines, over-the-counter drop offs and automated depots. The joint venture will also be responsible for ensuring the resources collected through the scheme are sent to appropriate destinations for recycling.

Cleanaway's CEO Mark Schubert said, "Following the success of Cleanaway's involvement in refund schemes in Victoria, NSW, Queensland and Western Australia, we are proud to partner with TOMRA once again to deliver a world-class recycling solution for Tasmanians."

"This is a great example of communities, industry and government working together to create a circular economy. With a national commitment to recycling beverage containers we have the power to transform the waste management landscape and deliver significant environmental, economic and social benefits. The CRS truly represents Cleanaway's commitment to making a sustainable future possible together," said Mr Schubert.

This Tasmanian CRS compliments the investments Cleanaway has made in Circular Plastics Australia* to reprocess plastic into food-grade packaging pellets.

Cleanaway looks forward to delivering a world-class CRS helping Tasmanians make a sustainable future possible together.

*The Circular Plastics Australia (PET) facilities in Albury-Wodonga and Altona are joint ventures between Cleanaway, PACT Group, Asahi Beverages and Coca Cola Europacific Partners to reprocess 56,000 tonnes of PET into food grade plastic pellets, the equivalent 2 billion PET bottles a year.

Cleanaway in partnership with PACT Group will open this year a new plastics pelletising facility at Laverton called Circular Plastics Australia (PE). This facility will become Australia's largest post-consumer HDPE and polypropylene recycling facility converting locally collected CDS and kerbside materials into high quality food grade recycled HDPE and recycled polypropylene resin.
