To strengthen support for young people, CLP Holdings Limited (CLP Holdings) and its subsidiary CLP Power Hong Kong Limited (CLP Power) are launching the CLP Graduate Internship Programme, which offers more than 60 one-year internships for fresh university graduates.

Combined with the company's regular trainee programmes, a total of around 130 intern and trainee positions will be offered this year, more than double the total for 2019.

Over the years, CLP has introduced a number of initiatives to provide learning opportunities for the younger generation to assist them in their career development. The CLP Graduate Internship Programme provides one-year internships for new university graduates, allowing them to gain practical working experience in a variety of departments of CLP Holdings and CLP Power, including engineering, environmental affairs, information technology, finance, sales and marketing, and human resources. The positions are open to all new graduates with Bachelor or Master's degrees in related disciplines, good academic results, and effective communication skills.

University engineering graduates can also apply to the CLP Graduate Trainee Programme, while individuals who have completed their education to Secondary Three level or above can apply to the CLP Technician Trainee Programme. CLP provides comprehensive training in the programmes, and trainees are afterwards assigned to engineering departments to gain practical experience and work towards becoming professional engineers or technicians. A total of around 70 trainees have been recruited under these two programmes this year.

CLP Power Managing Director Mr T K Chiang said: 'Our Chairman Sir Michael Kadoorie has said the young people of Hong Kong are guardians of our future. Faced with the recent social issues and the volatile situation of the COVID-19 outbreak which has seriously impacted the city's economy, we understand young people may feel uncertain about the future and the difficulties they may face when entering the job market. CLP, as a public utility rooted in Hong Kong, provides internship opportunities in different disciplines so that our young people can better understand the power industry, gain practical experience and may consider joining the company to serve the community.'

Apart from the 130 intern and trainee positions for graduates, CLP also provides internships for university students, either during summer vacations or as sandwich placements over a 12-month period, to encourage talented young people to join CLP when they graduate. The internship programme covers a wide range of projects, and more than 90 undergraduates have so far been recruited.

In addition, to help students further their studies in vocational and professional education and training (VPET), CLP Power will launch the CLP Award for VPET Students this year with HK$1.5 million from the CLP Community Energy Saving Fund. Students who have financial needs and are enrolled in VPET programmes of the Vocational Training Council (VTC) in the 2020/21 academic year will receive subsidies of HK$20,000 each to support their academic and career development on the recommendation of the VTC. There will be around 75 awards in the first year.

The CLP Power Academy established in 2017 will meanwhile continue to work in partnership with tertiary institutions in Hong Kong and overseas to provide a variety of part-time accredited programmes, ranging from diplomas and professional diplomas to Bachelor and Master's degrees in aspects of engineering for individuals who want to join the power industry, including junior secondary school leavers without relevant qualifications. The programmes help them obtain accredited academic and professional qualifications to advance their careers as well as nurturing a new generation of talent for Hong Kong's power engineering industry.
