CLP Power Hong Kong Limited (CLP Power) today (15 December) announced the winners of its third annual Smart Energy Award programme, applauding the outstanding performances of businesses and organisations behind ingenious energysaving and carbon reduction initiatives that are helping Hong Kong pivot towards a lower-carbon future.

More than 400 businesses and organisations entered this year's award programme and competed in four categories: Energy-Saving Performance, Peak Demand Management, Renewable Energy, and Smart Technology. The awards were separated into two sectors - the first for corporate and Government bodies, and the second for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and education institutes. Judges chose a total of 24 winners for their outstanding energy-saving performances.

Energy management to reduce carbon emissions has become increasingly important as average temperatures continue to rise because of climate change and Hong Kong is no exception. The Airport Authority Hong Kong (AA), which won the Peak Demand Management Grand Award in the Corporate/Government Bodies sector, drew praise for reducing its electricity consumption at peak demand hours through the application of advanced technology

The AA started to introduce electric vehicles since 2009 to reduce carbon emissions, establishing one of the largest corporate fleets of electric vehicles in Hong Kong in the process. Because of its large electric fleet and high demand for charging, the AA introduced a Smart-To-Charge system which intelligently distribute power supply to electric vehicles for charging at the same time, saving both time and cost in building additional infrastructure and allowing it to maximise the utilisation rate of chargers efficiently.

More and more businesses have adopted renewable energy in recent years. Sha Tau Kok Farm Organic Company Limited, which won the Renewable Energy Excellence Award in the SME/NGO/Education Institute sector, made intelligent use of different types of solar panels to bring renewable energy into its farm, including bendable thin-film solar panels on sun umbrellas for visitors to charge their mobile phones, and installed solar batteries to store electricity generated by solar systems to supply small consumption electrical appliances. The farm also signed up for CLP Power's Feed-in Tariff scheme, with the payments earned shortening the investment payback period for its RE facilities.

CLP Power Managing Director Mr T K Chiang said it was most encouraging to see Hong Kong's business community continuing to embrace energy conservation despite the considerable economic challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.

'CLP Power will continue its efforts to support customers in energy efficiency and conservation through a variety of projects in support of the Government's carbon reduction target. We will also actively promote the local renewable energy development, closely monitor the latest technological development of new zerocarbon energy, as well as look into sourcing more zero-carbon energy via regional cooperation to achieve the long-term carbon reduction goal.' he said.
