SYDNEY--EnergyAustralia, a unit of CLP Holdings Ltd., said it will close its Yallourn coal-fired power station in Australia's Victoria state early, citing the global transition to cleaner sources of energy.

EnergyAustralia on Wednesday said it will close its Yallourn facility in mid-2028, rather than in 2032 which it had previously planned.

It also said it will build Australia's first four-hour utility-scale battery of 350-megawatt capacity by 2026 in the same region. EnergyAustralia aims to be carbon neutral by 2050.

"The energy transition is too important to leave to chance," said Managing Director Catherine Tanna. EnergyAustralia's carbon-dioxide emissions will be cut by more than 60% compared with current levels when the station is closed.
