CLP Power Hong Kong Limited ('CLP Power') places great emphasis on talent development and skill transfer. Four CLP Power Technician Trainees and Assistant Engineer won top awards in the Outstanding Apprentice Award Scheme 2021 run by the Vocational Training Council (VTC), and the Trainee of the Year Award 2021 run by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) in recognition of their excellent performance and proactive learning attitude.

CLP Power Chief Operating Officer Mr Paul Tomlinson was delighted with the achievements of the four young employees, which he said not only reflected their efforts and dedication but also CLP Power's long-standing commitment to talent development. 'CLP Power has nurtured power engineering practitioners through a variety of trainee programmes over the years, offering opportunities to young people who want to realise their potential and develop exciting and rewarding careers in the power industry, and passing the baton from generation to generation,' he said. Mr Tomlinson said the company encouraged young engineering employees to fulfil their dreams with passion and perseverance while contributing to the power industry to drive Hong Kong's growth and development.

Technician Trainees Ms Jade Lam and Mr Kwan Ting-long were winners of VTC's Outstanding Apprentice Awards 2021 while Technician Trainee Ms Lai Tsz-kwan was named one of the Outstanding Apprentices (Merit). The three awardees - Ms Lam, Mr Kwan, and Ms Lai - all joined CLP Power through the company's Technician Trainee Programme in 2019. Ms Jade Lam said she realised early that traditional learning did not suit her personality and left school to work in the retail industry after completing Secondary 4. She joined the trainee programme after taking an interest in the power industry and is now responsible for carrying out maintenance and repair works on electricity equipment in switch rooms.

Ms Lam said that the comprehensive training provided by CLP Power gave her engineering knowledge, skills, and practical working experience through job rotations that included repair of overhead lines, cable jointing, and maintenance of substation equipment. She thanked her mentors and colleagues for guiding her patiently, recognising her strengths, and reviving her interest in learning. Ms Lam is now studying a Diploma of Vocational Education programme and hopes to become a professional engineer. Fellow trainee Mr Kwan Ting-long currently works in power stations where he maintains and repairs power generation equipment. Before joining CLP Power, he worked in a variety of positions in the retail, construction, and transport sectors. Eventually, he decided to change his career for better development. Mr Kwan said his training in CLP gave him a broad range of power engineering knowledge, including mechanical fitting and installation, and adjustment techniques for transmitters and analysers, and allowed him to identify areas of interest and set goals for his career development. His positivity and dedication have been recognised by his mentors and instructors, and Mr Kwan said he greatly appreciated their guidance and support. He is currently studying a Higher Diploma programme to equip himself with a higher qualification to overcome future challenges.

Another awardee Ms Lai Tsz-kwan took up a clerical job after graduating from university but found the work repetitive and uninspiring and decided to change career. She regarded power engineering as a profession and was excited by every challenge in the power industry which gave her a sense of vocation after joining the CLP Power Technician Trainee Programme. She was grateful for the guidance and opportunities given to her by her mentors which helped build a solid foundation for her career. Ms Lai is currently responsible for the maintenance and repair of overhead lines.

Looking ahead, she hopes to gain more experience in different positions and become a skilled engineer. Ms Chloe Yip - winner of the Third Prize of the Trainee of the Year Award 2021 presented by the HKIE - holds a Bachelor of Engineering (First Class Honours) degree in Mechanical Engineering, and completed the Master of Science programme in Intelligent Building Technology and Management at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. She was an intern with CLP Power during her time in university and received the CLP Engineering Studies Award for her outstanding performance before becoming a Graduate Trainee of CLP Group.

The Graduate Trainee Programme not only taught Ms Yip about the operations of power generation, transmission and distribution systems, but also gave her the opportunity to take part in a range of engineering projects, including the overhaul of generation facilities, commissioning of the new gas-fired generation unit and the West New Territories Landfill Gas Power Generation Project. She said the training enriched her experience of large-scale projects and enhanced her problem-solving capabilities in safety and risk management aspects. Ms Yip also proactively joins the activities organised by the industry and professional bodies, and volunteers outside working hours to provide career guidance to students and encourage them to take up engineering careers. She was grateful for the training and opportunities given to her by job rotations which broadened her horizons. She thanked hersupervisors and instructors, and looked forward to participating in project management, as well as research and development of CLP's low-carbon power generation projects to contribute to the company's reliable power supply and environmental initiatives
