Coal India excels on all fronts in Q2 & H1



In one of the best ever performances, during the first half of the fiscal year in recent times, Coal India Limited (CIL), the flagship Maharatna company of coal sector in India, ended the Q2 of the current fiscal (July-September 2012) on a high note as the company registered 10.9% and 8.1% growth in coal production and off-take respectively. Similarly, for H1 (April-September 2012) also CIL recorded a growth of 8.5% and 7.1% in both the physical facets.

Production:

The coal mining major produced 89.09 Million Tonnes (MTs) of coal in the quarter ending September 2012 compared to 80.30 MTs produced during the same period previous fiscal, clocking an increase of 8.79 MTs with 10.9% growth.

The progressive performance was also upbeat as CIL produced 191.54 MTs of coal during the first half of the fiscal (April-September 2012), which is 14.93 MTs more than what was produced during same period previous year showing a growth of 8.5%.

Coal Off-take:

Coal off-take, an important performance criterion, during July-September 2012 was 101.59 MTs against 94.02 MTs during the same period last year, which is an increase of 7.57 MTs. The growth in coal off-take was 8.1% on quarter-on-quarter basis.

During the H1 of the current fiscal (April-September 2012) CIL supplied 214.78 MTs of coal to its consumers compared to 199.98 MTs in the first half of the last fiscal, an increase of 14.80 MTs which is 7.4% growth.

Coal supplies to Power Utilities and NTPC:

Coal supply to power utilities, the largest consuming sector of CIL, in the quarter ending September 2012 was 75.09 MTs against 66.39 MTs during same quarter last year. The growth in coal supply to power sector on quarter-on-quarter basis has been 13.1%.

The power utilities of the country received 156.09 MTs of coal from CIL as a whole during the first half of the current fiscal (April-September 2012) compared to 141.33 MTs during April-September 2011, showing an increase of 14.76 MTs which is a growth of 10.4%.

Significantly, the growth in coal supply to the thermal power plants of NTPC during the Q2 of the current fiscal recorded a healthy 22.5% growth. NTPC was supplied with 29.24 MTs of coal during July-September 2012, which is 5.36 MTs more compared to Q2 of the last fiscal.

Coal supply to NTPC during April-September 2012 was 59.88 MTs compared to 50.51 MTs during same period last year registering a growth of 18.5%.

Wagon Loading:

Constant coordination with Railways witnessed an increased availability of rakes during Q2 of this year. On an average 162.6 rakes were loaded per day during July-September 2012 against 144.5 rakes/per day during same period last fiscal. The growth in average loading on quarter-on-quarter comparison has been 12.5%.

Likewise, there was also a 10.8% growth in wagon loading during the H1 of the current fiscal. Average loading during April-September 2012 was 171 rakes/day compared to 154.4 rakes/day in first half of the previous fiscal.

Coal Stock liquidation:

CIL has been able to liquidate 23.24 MTs of its ground stock during the first six months of the current financial year. CIL began the year with a pit-head stock of 70.88 MTs which stood at 47.64 MTs at September 2012 ending.
