Colgate-Palmolive Co. is recalling nearly 5 million bottles of Fabuloso multi-purpose cleaning products due to the risk of exposure to bacteria, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and the company said Wednesday.

The agency said the recalled products may contain Pseudomonas species bacteria, which pose a risk of serious infection for people with weakened immune systems, external medical devices or underlying lung conditions.

New York consumer-products giant Colgate said a preservative wasn't added at the intended levels during manufacturing, a misstep it said could allow bacteria growth in the products.

Colgate noted that while the recall encompasses 4.9 million bottles produced in December and January, roughly 3.9 million of the bottles were never released for sale.

Colgate and the CPSC noted that people with healthy immune systems aren't usually affected by the bacteria, which are environmental organisms found widely in soil and water. The company said consumers with products covered by the recall can request a refund or replacement.
