FRANKLIN, Tenn. (AP) _ Community Health Systems Inc. (CYH) on Wednesday reported second-quarter profit of $6 million.

On a per-share basis, the Franklin, Tennessee-based company said it had net income of 4 cents. Earnings, adjusted to extinguish debt and for asset impairment costs, were 23 cents per share.

The results beat Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of six analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was breakeven on a per-share basis.

The operator of accute care hospitals posted revenue of $3.01 billion in the period, also exceeding Street forecasts. Five analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $2.97 billion.

Community Health Systems expects full-year earnings to be 60 cents to 80 cents per share, with revenue in the range of $11.9 billion to $12.3 billion.

Community Health Systems shares have climbed 93% since the beginning of the year. In the final minutes of trading on Wednesday, shares hit $14.31, more than tripling in the last 12 months.
