Rukumoana Schaafhausen will join the Board of Contact Energy ('Contact') as an independent director in March 2021.

Mrs Schaafhausen chairs Waikato-Tainui and Miro Berries. She is also the managing director of Te Waharoa Investments and a director of AgResearch. She is also a trustee of the Tindall Foundation and The Princes Trust. She has previously been a director of Genesis Energy and has received a Sir Peter Blake Award for Leadership.

Contact chair Rob McDonald said Mrs Schaafhausen was an outstanding appointment. 'We're delighted to have a person of Ruku's calibre and mana joining the Contact board. She will bring her strong values, diverse thinking, and passion for Aotearoa to Contact and we're very much looking forward to her contribution when she joins us in March.'

Mrs Schaafhausen is a commercial and property lawyer, director and influential member of her iwi, Ngāti Haua. 'It's an exciting appointment for me, and I think there are huge opportunities for Contact ahead,' she said. 'I see my strengths in working across corporates, communities and iwi to make positive social change and I'm looking forward to contributing.'

Mrs Schaafhausen will join the Board officially on 1 March 2021. This coincides with the retirement of current director Whaimutu Dewes from the Contact Board from 31 March 2021, as announced last week.
