CoreCivic : Properties Making Strides in Environmental Sustainability

CoreCivic has a long-standing history of finding innovative ways to fulfill our mission to better the public good. That includes reducing our environmental footprint through conservation measures and operational efficiency.

Since 2019, CoreCivic has reduced the use of electricity, fossil fuels, and water at our facilities nationwide by investing in energy-efficient options. These reductions are directly related to initiatives implemented by CoreCivic Properties, which include retrofitting the lighting in our Safety facilities to LED bulbs that use 75 percent less electricity and last 25 times longer than incandescent bulbs.

We are also in the process of upgrading our HVAC units to energy-efficient models. Our robust preventive maintenance program also helps to improve efficiency and prolong the lifespan of equipment.

Beginning next year, we will begin investing more heavily in reducing water consumption with the use of water control systems, which are currently in use at nine CoreCivic facilities. Over the next several years, we plan to add these systems to facilities in Arizona, Nevada, California, New Mexico and Colorado. The creation of a megadrought committee will also help monitor drought conditions, follow drought-related news, and discuss innovative solutions to conserve water at our facilities.
