Fires caused a 400% increase in the number of occurrences in power transmission lines
According to a survey made by ISA CTEEP Operations Center, approximately 133 power outages were recorded in 2020

São Paulo, March 17, 2021 - Fires and illegal fires are among the main causes of forced shutdowns in the power transmission network. According to ISA CTEEP, the largest private electric power transmission company in the country, from January to December 2020, approximately 133 occurrences with fires were recorded close to the company's lines, around 400% increase as compared to the same period in 2019. Araraquara, Ribeirão Preto, Bauru and Mirassol are some of the most impacted cities, in the countryside of São Paulo state.

'Not only the fire, but also the soot and smoke caused by the fires are responsible for the outages in energy supply to local distributors. Due to this, it is necessary to raise awareness among the population to use methods other than fire for pruning and cleaning of lands', says Gabriela Desiré, executive officer of operations at ISA CTEEP.

According to Decree 2,661, of July 1998, it is forbidden to set fire to a range of five meters from the safety limits of power transmission lines and 100 meters around the substations. Therefore, those failing to comply with the law are subject to the penalties provided for in the legislation.

To prevent fires, at the peak of the drought period, between July and November, the transmission company develops an annual communication campaign to raise public awareness. Last year, a series of tips were prepared, such as not lighting candles or campfires close to the vegetation; do not set fire to clean the area; do not throw cigarette butts; do not release balloons, among others. All tips can be accessed on the website (http://queimadas.isacteep.com.br/). The Talk to Us channel is also available, where information or reports of fires near the transmission lines can be found (http://www.isacteep.com.br/pt/canais-e-servicos/fale-conosco).

In addition, the company is investing in responsive inspection mechanisms and procedures, such as the use of the Clima Tempo's lightning monitoring platform. In addition to the meteorological monitoring carried out, the tool also identifies fires along the transmission lines, helping to act preventively and to identify the outage cause, since, depending on the fire proportion, there is no time for the Fire Department to act beforehand.
