As the world's leading local delivery platform, Delivery Hero plays an important role in supporting the entire delivery ecosystem. For us, it is paramount to keep our communities safe, healthy, and fed, all whilst supporting our riders, restaurant partners, and local businesses to thrive.

Supporting an ecosystem as diverse and complex as ours is not without its challenges. However, through our sophisticated platform model and applied product innovation, we can support the creation of new jobs, grow local economies, and accelerate digitization within our markets.

When it comes to creating a thriving delivery ecosystem, we also want to support the local communities in which we operate. This goes back to one of our core values: we are Heroes because we care. We always aim to leverage our global strength and local-rootedness to make a difference. Here are just some of the ways we are giving back to the community that gives so much to us.

Ramadan Heroes: Donating over 650,000 meals

Partnering with charities is one of the core ways that Delivery Hero and its local entities support the local ecosystem. Over 11 initiatives across 7 markets were carried out by talabat in the UAE. For example, talabat relaunched its Ramadan Heroes campaign in 2021 in partnership with Emirates Red Crescent (ERC), Dubai Culture, UAE Food Bank and tmart. All donation proceeds are sent to ERC, who purchase Ramadan boxes from tMart and donate them to the UAE Food Bank. The Food Bank then distributes these Ramdan boxes to their beneficiaries across the UAE. Talabat Jordan has also signed a Support Agreement with Jordanian Food Bank, allocating an option for customers to donate directly to the food bank through the application. 'Time to Support Each Other': 40,000 donations in Turkey

Community support is in abundance at Yemeksepeti too. Yemeksepeti collaborated with Turkey's leading NGOs including the Turkish Red Crescent Organisation, the Turkish Foundation for Combating Soil Erosion (TEMA), Community Volunteers Association (TOG), Turkish Education Foundation (TEV), and UNICEF to launch the 'Time to Support Each Other' project. To date, over 40,000 users have provided donations which have supported numerous charity initiatives. To illustrate the impact of the project, currently 50 people have been trained on climate change preparedness, 6 students received 1-year scholarship support, 1226 students received food aid, and 670 children were provided with a 'Home Learning Set.'

Social Security for Riders

Our local brand, PedidosYa Chile, is on a mission to ensure that riders in Chile receive the best health insurance and attention possible, through a partnership with Mutual de Seguridad. Mutual de Seguridad is a non-profit health organization that provides riders access to social security, in particular occupational accidents insurance. Due to a law in Chile dating back to 2019, freelancers and independent workers must make mandatory payments with every invoice they issue, which goes directly towards funding their personal social security, health insurance, retirement pension and more. The social benefits of this partnership for riders are immense, providing security and safety so that riders can rest assured that they will be taken care of on the job.

Boosting business during the pandemic

To support restaurant partners during the pandemic, PedidosYa also gave away branded advertisement space to more than 300 partners located in different areas of Chile, incorporating this into the 'Heroes of your Neighbourhood' campaign. The campaign caused partners' sales to increase by over 20%, strengthening the community bond between local restaurant partners and customers.

Looking forward: What's next?

Delivery Hero's local entities are already taking great steps to support the local community, but it doesn't stop there. To learn more about the challenges and opportunities, we spoke to Pieter-Jan Vandepitte, COO of Delivery Hero, Hadeer Shalabym, MD talabat Egypt and Javier Aranguiz, MD Pedidosya Chile to learn more about the issue. You can tune into the latest episode of HeroVoice to learn more about what they had to say here.
