ATLANTA (AP) _ Delta Air Lines Inc. (DAL) on Tuesday reported a third-quarter loss of $5.38 billion, after reporting a profit in the same period a year earlier.

On a per-share basis, the Atlanta-based company said it had a loss of $8.47. Losses, adjusted for one-time gains and costs, came to $3.30 per share.

The results missed Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of 13 analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for a loss of $3.14 per share.

The airline posted revenue of $3.06 billion in the period, which also did not meet Street forecasts. Eleven analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $3.09 billion.

Delta shares have declined 44% since the beginning of the year, while the Standard & Poor's 500 index has climbed slightly more than 9%. The stock has fallen 39% in the last 12 months.
