Support on the road to the Olympic Games 2021

Deutsche Wohnen provides training equipment for the women's scull team

Berlin, 24 June 2021. Since September 2018, Deutsche Wohnen has been an "Official Partner" of the Olympic Training Centre Berlin and an "Official Title Partner" of the women's scull team of the German Rowing Federation. As part of this partnership, the Berlin-based company, whose headquarters are just under 10 kilometres away from the German Rowing Federation's training centre here in the capital, supports the women's scull team in their sporting endeavours.

Deutsche Wohnen, as official title partner, is now making further training equipment available to the women's scull team. In addition to countless training sessions on the water, the athletes also train on bikes in order to develop their basic stamina for rowing. After Deutsche Wohnen had equipped the women with high-quality mountain bikes at the start of their partnership, the Berlin-based company is now sponsoring the team with high-performance cycling jerseys. In addition, the athletes have received four rowing ergometers at their training centre as well as four hard-top transport boxes to enable them to take the ergometers to their training camps without getting them damaged. And what is special about these ergometers is that they can be connected up to create a crew of four. This means that the training to harmonise the four members of the crew, which is so important for the success of the boat, can now be done on land as well.

Mario Woldt, Sports Director of the German Rowing Federation, is delighted at the new training equipment: "We are always grateful when we receive such fantastic support, as we do from Deutsche Wohnen. Our preparations for the Olympic Games are proceeding at full speed, and the rowing machines and cycling jerseys have come at just the right time."

And the head of the national training centre, Dr. Frank-RomanLauter, adds: "The support of Deutsche Wohnen enables us to have the unbureaucratic flexibility that is invaluable to us in our efforts to create a successful environment for our national team."

Finally, Michael Zahn, CEO of Deutsche Wohnen, says of the company's sponsorship: "We wanted to make a social contribution to sport in Berlin. And we made a conscious decision to choose the sport of rowing because up to now it has not had as much attention from sponsors as some other sports. So, we are all the more pleased to be able to support the women's scull team and to accompany them on the road to the Olympic Games. We are keeping our fingers crossed as they compete for a medal."

Next stop: Olympic Games

Following a process of centralisation in the sport of rowing, the national women's scull team has trained in Berlin since 2018, one of a total of four Germany-wide specialist training centres of the German Rowing Federation. Since that time, Deutsche Wohnen has been a partner for the rowers in the women's scull team and has supported them through targeted projects - and helped them to achieve success too. In their preparations for the Olympic Games they have already managed to win several international medals.

After the women's quadruple scull qualified for the Olympic Games in Tokyo (Japan) at the 2019 World Championships in Linz (Austria), the women's double scull from the national training centre, with Leonie Menzel (Germania Düsseldorf Rowing Club 1904) and Annekatrin Thiele (DHfK Leipzig Sports Club, Rowing Section), booked their tickets for Tokyo at the Final Olympic Qualification regatta in Lucerne in May of this year. For Thiele, these will be her fourth Olympic Games, whilst Menzel is delighted to be taking part for the first time. And the season has been running to plan for the women's quadruple scull as well. With a bronze medal at the European Championships in Varese (Italy) and as overall winners of the World Rowing Cup, the team of four is going to Japan full of confidence and will be rowing in just under a month in an attempt to win an Olympic medal.
