• 12,000 customer-facing colleagues will see their hourly pay go from an average of £8.88 per hour to £9.50 per hour
  • The increase will align hourly pay to the current rates set by The Real Living Wage Foundation
  • The business is investing nearly £25m in training, wellbeing and reward programmes for colleagues, to provide them with skills for life

Dixons Carphone, the business behind Currys PC World and Carphone Warehouse, will increase the minimum rate of pay to all hourly paid UK colleagues in retail, supply chain and contact centres to £9.50 per hour from an average of £8.88 per hour - an increase of 9%. The move represents a multimillion-pound investment in colleagues as the business rewards their hard work and dedication during the pandemic and beyond.

Almost 12,000 hourly paid frontline colleagues will benefit from the increase, which will take effect from October 2021. While the retailer already pays above the government-legislated National Living Wage rates, the increase will align Dixons Carphone's rates to those currently set by the Real Living Wage Foundation and will boost the weekly pay of someone working 35 hours a week from, on average, £310.80 to £332.50. Dixons Carphone will also pay a London weighting of £1.35 per hour, taking London-based colleagues' minimum hourly pay to £10.85 per hour.

Alongside the increase in hourly pay, the business is making a series of investments totalling nearly £25m over two years (FY21 and FY22) in skills, wellbeing and reward programmes for colleagues. This includes offering colleagues nearly half a million hours of learning in 2020, training almost 1,000 colleagues as Mental Health First Aiders and Champions and opening one of three scheduled new technical training facilities, helping colleagues build skills for life. Colleagues also benefit from the company's award-winning Colleague Shareholder Scheme, which grants a minimum of £1,000 worth of shares to eligible colleagues, ensuring that all its people are invested in its future success.

Paula Coughlan, Chief People Officer at Dixons Carphone, said: 'The pandemic has prompted a fundamental shift in how customers are choosing to shop, towards a blended model of stores and online. The possibilities this brings are genuinely exciting, and we're investing heavily in our colleagues, their tools and their training to support this hybrid world. We're building their skills, not only for their careers, but for life, and ensuring they're rewarded fairly for their hard work, skill, adaptability, resilience and dedication.

'In doing so, we're creating more rewarding work for our colleagues and, as our colleagues are also shareholders, they are truly invested in our future success. And of course, happy colleagues make happy customers. With our stores up and down the nation re-opening and the potential to bring the best of online and stores together begins to be realised, now is our colleagues' moment. We want to unleash their full potential to empower them to deliver on our vision of helping everyone enjoy amazing technology.'
