DKSH Organizes Voluntary Diving Initiative to Clean up Ocean Plastics in Malaysia

Continuing its efforts of protecting and preserving the ecosystems in the ocean through the "Marine Conservation" Sustainability program, DKSH Malaysia has organized its first underwater clean-up activity at Pulau Tenggol, Terengganu.

Petaling Jaya, Malaysia, October 25, 2022 - DKSH, a leading partner for companies seeking to grow their businesses in Asia and beyond, conducted an ocean clean-up program at Pulau Tenggol, Terengganu, which lasted three days and two nights. The initiative aimed at creating a cleaner environment for life below water and is in line with DKSH's Sustainability Framework that is built on the three pillars: Our People - Our Partners - Our Planet.

The "Marine Conservation" project initiated in April 2022 is part of DKSH Malaysia's Sustainability initiative, which aims to raise awareness on marine pollution, inspire people to take responsibility for their environmental impact, and protect the biodiversity of the marine ecosystems. Last month, DKSH Malaysia has also mobilized approximately 140 volunteers in a beach clean-up across eight beaches and successfully removed a total of 456.3kg of coastal trash.

During this new volunteer event, around 20 DKSH scuba divers performed a total of five dives in various locations around Tenggol Island. The divers were divided into groups, each led by an experienced dive supervisor from the Tenggol Coral Beach Resort. Their combined efforts resulted in the collection of 10 kilograms of marine debris in total.

In addition to removing trash from the sea floor, the volunteers also planted some corals, extracted approximately 50 crown-of-thorns starfish from the House Wreck, and collected about 35 kilograms of trash from the shoreline through a coastal clean-up activity.

Victor Liew, Director, Performance Materials, DKSH Indonesia, Malaysia & Singapore, who participated in the underwater clean-up program himself, commented: "The tropical seas of Malaysia are among the areas with the richest marine biodiversity in the world. Out of seven marine turtles species known in the world, four can be found in Malaysian waters. Therefore, it was really rewarding for me, as a scuba diver, to volunteer and support this meaningful cause for the benefit of our environment, society, and future generations."
