for workpiece pickup & transfer

On October 1st, 2021, DMG MORI CO., LTD. (hereinafter referred to as "DMG MORI") will release "WH-AGV 5", an innovative workpiece transfer and loading/unloading system that enables in-plant logistic automation and full factory digitization.

AGV stands for "Automated Guided Vehicles." With the rising demand for automation, it has drawn attention as an alternative for conventional transfer devices, such as hand lifters or fork lifts. Especially, a "guideless self-drive AGV," which moves flexibly without rails, facilitates high-mix production with varying lot sizes and is increasingly popular in the manufacturing and logistics industry. Previously, however, guideless AGVs had the positioning accuracy of over 10 mm and were not a realistic option for workpiece loading and unloading.

Our brand-newWH-AGV 5 overcame such a problem. It incorporates an in-house guideless self-drive AGV and a collaborative robot, setting a new standard for in-plant logistic system. It does not require magnetic tapes or markers to find an optimized path and boasts high driving capacity to run through cables with a maximum height of 35 mm. Besides the workpiece transfer, it can also perform direct workpiece loading/unloading to machines; vision sensors at the edge of the robot arm allows position/posture adjustment and the positioning accuracy of ±1mm or even less.

Thanks to the laser scanner, it can detect and avoid humans and objects without safety fences, creating a collaborative environment with operators. Our in-house AGV Controller covers not only the workpiece transfer to machines, but also to peripheral equipment such as washing and measuring stations.

Unlike other robot systems, WH-AGV 5 can be connected with other devices in the factory for efficient data collection and usage. With the collected information, it can accurately estimate the necessary lot size and adjust the process accordingly, even under complicated conditions. WH-AGV 5 can be purchased separately as a retrofit, making it an optimal solution for SMEs*1 who produce various workpieces in different lot sizes. The application is not limited to the machine tool automation, but also to the factory automation.
