Dominion Energy Inc. on Tuesday said the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission extended the operating license for one of its nuclear energy facilities serving Virginia and North Carolina.
Dominion Energy said the NRC gave a 20-year extension to the operating license of the Surry Power Station, which is located in Surry County, VA. The company said the facility operates two nuclear units capable of generating electricity for 419,000 homes.
Dominion also said the NRC is currently reviewing its application to renew the licenses of the two North Anna Power Station units in Louisa County, Va.
The company said the two facilities produce almost one third of the electricity for the company's approximately 2.7 million customers in Virginia and North Carolina, and they also represent 92% of the carbon-free electricity generation in Virginia.
