Duke Energy Corp. posted growth in revenue and earnings in the latest quarter as results from its electric-utilities business improved.

The Charlotte, N.C.-based energy company logged earnings of $1.79 a share, a rise from $1.74 a share in the same three-month period a year earlier. Net income was $1.41 billion, up from $1.3 billion last year.

Stripping out one-time items, adjusted earnings were $1.88 a share. Analysts were expecting adjusted earnings of $1.80 a share, according to FactSet

Operating revenue grew to $6.95 billion from $6.72 billion in 2020's third quarter. Analysts had forecast revenue of $7.27 billion.

Rate case contributions and higher volumes boosted growth in the company's electric utilities and infrastructure business.

The gas utilities and infrastructure pared its segment loss to $3 million from $73 million in the same period a year ago.

Commercial renewable income increased to $78 million from $60 million in the year-ago quarter.
