(Alliance News) - Small nuclear reactors to provide decarbonized power to industrial districts are the focus of an agreement signed between Edison, Edf and Enea.
As Corriere Friday highlights, the Small Modular Reactors, produced by Edf, will be able to be installed next to energy-intensive plants and, in addition to producing electricity, will generate green hydrogen, steam for industrial processes and district heating. Each module will have a capacity of 300-400 MW and cost about EUR2 billion, with commercialization planned from 2030.
The agreement aims to strengthen Italy's role in the development of innovative nuclear technologies, fostering a national supply chain and European leadership. Meanwhile, the government is preparing a framework law on nuclear power, expected in late January, which will introduce a supervisory agency operational from 2026 and rules to attract private investment, including foreign investment.
An Italian newco, led by Enel Spa with Ansaldo Nucleare and Leonardo Spa as partners, will study third-generation technologies. According to the International Energy Agency, nuclear power will reach a record 2,900 terawatt hours in 2025.
