Portugal to join the EDP Atlantic Mission with Francisco Lufinha
Thursday07, October 2021

The boat in which the sailor will be traveling alone to the Caribbean will be filled with the names of Portuguese nationals. To show your support for Francisco Lufinha in the boldest mission of his career, simply register on the EDP website.

Francisco Lufinha wants to cross the Atlantic Ocean all by himself, in a boat pulled by a kite and powered by the energy of wind, sun, and water. To complete his boldest mission so far - sailing from Lisbon to the Caribbean next month -, Lufinha will have the invaluable support of the Portuguese people.

To send him some extra energy and show support for Francisco Lufinha's mission, anyone can enter their name or that of a friend or family member on the EDP website (https://www.edp.com/en/changing-tomorrow-now/edp-atlantic-mission/name-lufinha-boat). The purpose of this mission - in addition to trying to set a new world record - is to raise awareness about the need to protect our planet; therefore, Portuguese supporters who join the "Put your name on Lufinha's boat" initiative are asked to commit to a few easy, sustainable missions aiming at a clean ocean and a healthy planet.

By registering on the EDP website the name that will be written on the boat, the "virtual sailor" will have to commit to a sustainable mission: picking up plastic on a beach or along a riverbank, buying environmentally certified products, avoiding single-use packaging, or opting for clean energy sources. These are simple changes that can make a big difference if they are adopted by more and more people - and this is what EDP and Francisco Lufinha want to achieve with this initiative.

Lufinha's EDP Atlantic Mission will leave Portugal in November and head towards the Caribbean in a boat powered only by the energy of wind, sun, and water. It should be pointed out that last September, Lufinha carried out the first oceanic test aboard the kiteboat, in a four-day journey from Cascais to Madeira Island.

The EDP Atlantic Mission is one of the four projects that materialize EDP's ambition of becoming a fully green company by 2030 - i.e., to produce energy only from water, sun, and wind. This commitment bears the "EDP Changing Tomorrow Now" signature and is being advertised and implemented in the 22 countries where the company operates.
It should be pointed out that from 2013 to 2017, Lufinha kitesurfed no less than 3372 kilometers during four extreme challenges in which he connected the Portuguese territory by sea; this mission, on the other hand, will cover about 6,700 kilometers, almost twice the total distance he traveled to date.
