No sooner won than launched! This summer, the Valens teams, a subsidiary of Eiffage Benelux, won the contract for the construction of the new Integrated Psychiatry Institute of the Saint-Luc and Valisana University Clinics in Woluwe-Saint-Lambert, on the UCLouvain campus. This week, construction work began on this structure, which is unique in Belgium.

The 18,000 sqm building is spread over six floors and a car park, and will house the activities of the Valisana psychiatric hospital and the adult and child psychiatry departments of the Universitary Clinics Saint-Luc (with a car park and a sports hall in the basement). The institute will thus become a reference centre par excellence in Belgium in the field of psychiatric care.

As the first chapter of the 'Hospital 2025' reconstruction programme for the Universitary Clinics Saint-Luc, Valens will carry out the structural work as well as the finishing touches and the installation of the technical equipment. This programme, which is being carried out in several phases, includes the construction of the King Albert II Institute, which will house all of Saint-Luc's onco-haematological activities, and the reconstruction of the hospitalization tower.

In terms of architecture, the building was designed by the Belgian firm MODULO, in association with the Dutch firm Gortemaker Algra Feenstra, and the special techniques and stability engineering firm ELLYPS. The building is characterised by its oval shape, which increases the complexity of the structural work. In addition, the construction site is subject to a number of constraints: numerous environmental requirements, such as the preservation of the Natura 2000 zone, adjacent parking, access to the Cliniques universitaires Saint-Luc, the auditoriums of the UCLouvain and the neighbouring universities. The STIB bus route and the 5-star hotel opposite are other challenges for the Valens teams.

In all, the Institute will have 94 adult psychiatric inpatient beds (24 for Saint-Luc and 70 for Valisana, currently located at the Sanatia Clinic in Saint-Josse), 22 day/night child psychiatric inpatient beds and 30 day beds in child psychiatry. Bringing children, adolescents and adults together in one place will guarantee coherence in the care of patients and facilitate treatment.

Congratulations to the teams for this new business and this start of work, and thanks to our partners!
