The importance of advancing environmental sustainability is not new, but the urgency is coming into sharper focus as recent reports show the imminent threat of climate change to our communities and businesses. This message is resonating as, for the first time ever, CEOs ranked environmental sustainability in their top 10 strategic business priorities in 2022.

While business leaders understand the importance of environmental transformation, it can be difficult to know where to start. Increased demand for resources and pressure to meet sustainability targets mean that companies must implement solutions that not only reduce their carbon footprint, but also maintain reliability for their customers and deliver business results. This is easier said than done.

At Emerson, we believe automation is the strategic lever all companies must pull to reach sustainability goals - and our Plantweb™ digital ecosystem is the key to helping the world's most essential industries unlock the promise of automation. Built upon Emerson's more than two decades of expertise in control, pervasive sensing, operations and software, Plantweb is the standard-bearer for industrial automation architecture, empowering companies around the world to optimize operational and business performance while enabling critical strides in sustainability.

Here are just a few examples of the many ways Plantweb has made more sustainable operations a reality for leading industries around the globe:

Increasing Production of More Sustainable Fuel Sources

Plantweb is helping companies at the forefront of the global energy transition. Neste, a global renewable fuels leader, selected Emerson technologies to accelerate the digital transformation of its expanded refinery in Singapore. Using Plantweb's advanced software, analytics and mobility tools, as well as Emerson's DeltaV™ automation system and software, the expanded refinery will have additional capacity to produce up to 1 million tons of sustainable aviation fuel and renewable raw materials for polymers and chemicals, supporting Neste's goal to reduce customers' greenhouse gas emissions by at least 20 million tons annually by 2030.

Enabling Recycling of Plastic

Waste reduction and recycling will play an important role in driving a more sustainable future. PureCycle Technologies is a leader in the sustainable plastic revolution and is using the Plantweb™ digital ecosystem to provide advanced digital technologies and automation for a network of global facilities enabling large-scale recycling of polypropylene. This is one of the most frequently produced, versatile and widely used plastics in the world - but less than 1% is reclaimed annually for recycling and reuse. Using Plantweb technologies, PureCycle is aiming to change that.

Supporting the Delivery of Renewable Power

Renewable power is a critical part of creating a sustainable energy mix. More and more utilities are integrating renewables with traditional power sources like coal, nuclear and natural gas to meet sustainability requirements. To help fast-track this shift, renewable energy sources like wind and solar farms need to incorporate technologies that can forecast supply, increase reliability and integrate power generated into the electricity grid. The Golden Valley Electric Association, for example, recently completed a digital transformation project to integrate Emerson's Ovation™ automation platform and AspenTech smart grid solutions to increase the reliability of clean energy generation at its Eva Creek wind farm in Alaska.

Companies across the industrial space are charged with maintaining the most critical functions of modern life in a dynamic environment. With scalable solutions for companies anywhere in their automation journey, Emerson's Plantweb provides the most advanced, comprehensive industrial software architecture to help companies around the world optimize operational and business performance while enabling critical strides in sustainability.
