EMvision Medical Devices Limited announced the receipt of Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) approval from Metro South Health, for its planned pilot clinical trial for the brain scanner program at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane. Ethics approval is a crucial step in the conduct of clinical research and the HREC plays a central role in the ethical oversight of research involving human participants. This includes consideration of the scientific design of the study, how participants will be recruited, the care and protection from harm of research participants and protection of research participants' confidentiality. The study is designed to obtain imaging data from participants with diagnosed stroke, with confirmatory CT and/or MRI scans, to refine the algorithms for the company’s brain scanner. The study is a single-centre, two- group observational study of participants with a diagnosed stroke. Up to twenty (20) participants will be enrolled in each group: haemorrhagic stroke (group A) and ischemic stroke (group B) with up to 30 patients in total. No intervention or modification to the usual hospital based treatment of stroke is proposed as part of this trial. Receipt of ethics approval follows the successful completion of healthy human volunteer trials, which demonstrated device safety and usability. The company is currently finalizing the brain scanner's hardware and user interface software elements, in preparation for fabrication of the clinical trial units. The company will provide updates on device development progress and the clinical study program in due course.
