• The installation will be at Bridgestone's plant in Burgos, one of the three in Spain, and will have more than 20,500 solar panels occupying a total area of more than 40,000m2.
  • The project will involve investment of around Euro 5 million euros.
  • With this project, 14% of the electricity consumed by the plant will be obtained directly from a renewable source and without emissions: The sun.
  • The factory in Burgos factory will serve as a reference to the rest of Bridgestone EMIA's plants that will build similar installations in the future as part of the Bridgestone Group's sustainability strategy

Endesa, through its subsidiary Endesa X, and Bridgestone, the world leader in advanced solutions and sustainable mobility, have signed an agreement to launch what will be one of the most important self-consumption installations in Spain.

The Bridgestone plant in Burgos (1 of the 3 it has in Spain and 13, in Europe) will have a 9.2 MW rooftop solar power installation. Endesa X will be responsible for the installation of more than 20,500 solar panels on the roof of the plant. This project involves an investment of more than five million euros and the panels will cover a total area of more than 40,000m2, equivalent to more than 5 football fields and approximately one third of the total area of the factory.

The installation will begin in the coming months and is expected to be operational by the end of the first half of 2022. The factory in Burgos will be a benchmark for other plants that are studying similar installations in the future, as part of Bridgestone Group's sustainability strategy that aims to be carbon neutral by 2050 and reduce its CO2 emissions by 50% by 2030[1].

These solar panels will mean that 14% of the electricity consumed by the plant will be obtained from the sun. In this way, the plant will promote self-consumption by minimising its impact on both the environment and the electricity grid and will be able to produce what is called Km0 energy, that is, the energy will be produced at its point of consumption, which is more beneficial to the environment. The installation will enable all the machinery operating in the plant to be powered by solar energy at certain times in the summer.

In the words of Javier Juárez, director of the plant 'We are very proud that our plant has been chosen as a benchmark as part of the Bridgestone Group's sustainability strategy. Bridgestone plants currently consume one hundred percent renewable energy. Now, with this installation we will go one step further, because instead of buying all the energy we require, we will generate it through our own resources, with the environmental benefit that this represents.'

'Every day, we find that more companies not only seek solutions with which they can improve their energy efficiency, but also want to go further and also show a firm commitment to sustainability, Bridgestone is one of these companies. Here in Endesa X we are a proud to accompany you on this journey towards decarbonisation, and we are doing our best to make the whole process easier for you by putting numerous solutions at your disposal. In the case of photovoltaic self-consumption, we take care of everything and provide not only turnkey solutions but we also look for the best formula so that the initial investment is not a barrier, by making the investment ourselves', said Alvaro Otaolarruchi, director of B2B in Endesa X.'

No initial outlay

Bridgestone has contracted the project under a 15-year lease, which means it does not need to make an initial investment in the installation. Endesa X is responsible for all project management from start to finish, from initial processing to the start up, including the maintenance of the installation during the lifetime of the contract.

This means that Bridgestone will be able to focus its resources on implementing additional efficiency measures at the Burgos plant and have peace of mind because the installation will be managed by Endesa X.

100% of electricity consumed in European locations is renewable in origin

Bridgestone EMIA recently announced that 100% of the electricity consumed at its European Bridgestone locations, including all tyre plants, the European R&D Centre in Rome, the PCT plant in Lanklaar, the textile plant in Usánsolo and EMIA's Brussels headquarters, comes from renewable sources.
