BERLIN, Conn. -For the last five years Anthony Mascaro's been working to keep the power flowing for Eversource customers. The Southington native knew he wanted to be a lineworker since he was a little boy, and that dream came true when he was 18.

"It was the only thing I ever wanted to do," said Mascaro. "I remember as a kid, when the power would go out and those big yellow trucks would come down the street. I looked up to those guys and wanted to be one of them and get the power back on for people."

While Mascaro typically works on electric lines atop utility poles from a bucket truck, this weekend he and dozens of fellow employees will be climbing poles instead of raising the bucket. They'll be showcasing skills used in the "olden days" as part of the Eversource Lineworker's Rodeo. Competitors will participate in various events, including "the speed climb" when they race up a 40 foot pole while holding a basket that has an egg in it with their teeth; and "the rescue" where lineworkers save an "injured" co-worker from the top of a pole.

"It's great, you get to do things that you don't get to do in a regular work day," said Mascaro. "It's good to have competition in your trade and I have a competitive nature in me."

The Eversource Lineworker's Rodeo gets underway at 7:45 Saturday morning, June 3 at the company's work center located at 48 Tolland Stage Road in Tolland. The public is invited and admission is free. Rodeo winners will advance to the international championship later this year in Kansas.
